Dedicated To Our Veterans In Honor Of Their Service To Our Country: Lest We Forget!

The recently renovated room, now being called the uniform room, is almost complete. We are excited about future plans. Oconee County has become a very popular tourist destination and the Short Street museums are benefiting.

Vet-Fest took place on March 25th on a beautiful spring day. The group's first stop was at Wolf Stake Church where a Medal of Honor ceremony was taking place. The Lewis G. Watkins Detachment of the Marine Corps League was in charge of conducting the ceremony. It was to honor all veterans and included all of the county's veteran organizations. It was well attended and this year five members of the Watkins family were present as well as State Senator Thomas Alexander and State Representative Bill Whitmire. Patriots' Hall has the honor of displaying the medal that Lewis. G. Watkins was awarded. He is the only known recipient from Oconee County. Later that day, the Vet-Fest group returned and participated in a fund raising auction to benefit Patriots Hall.

As mentioned previously, the new uniform room is a recent addition to the museum. One uniform we are fortunate to acquire belonged to a former marine, U.S.M.C. Lieutenant General Carol A. Mutter. Carol is the first woman in the history of the U.S. Armed Forces to be appointed to a three-star grade. She retired in 1999. Her last active duty assignment was Deputy Chief of Staff, Manpower and Reserve Affairs at Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington D. C. Carol is a good friend of a good friend of the museum, Shirley Flood. It was through Shirley's efforts that we have Carol's complete uniform to stand along side of Hank Flood's. A big thank you to both Carol and Shirley for their thoughtfulness.

In June, visitors to Patriots Hall will see a new look in the library. In addition to the new shelves, additional units will be installed including a desk and filing cabinets. Hopefully, someday soon, there will be a computer on that desk.
