Dedicated To Our Veterans In Honor Of Their Service To Our Country: Lest We Forget!

Museum News: Stored items will soon be moved across the street. Board President Jon Busch has a key to the old coroner's building, now owned by the Cherokee Museum. Moving days will be announced and volunteers will be needed. This will mean that the last space available in the museum will be renovated and used as a display area.

Vet Fest Event #1: Honor Hike, a scheduled hike simulating the distance of the Bataan Death March…a distance of 65 miles…will be a fund raising event for the museum. Participants can hike a segment of the Foothills Trail in Oconee County that has been designated. This hike will be in honor of the soldiers who were there…those that completed the forced march and those that did not. The dates of the hike are anytime between March 10 and March 17 and participants may hike as much of the trail as they choose. There will be many exit points so they may hike it in segments over that week. A shuttle service will be available. Hikers are requested to obtain sponsors. The sponsors will donate an amount of money (one penny or more) per mile hiked. The Patriots Hall or the Gizmo hiker Facebook Pages are the places to register to hike. For additional information, contact Tom Yates at www.in2harleys@yahoo.com or call him at 864-616-4493.

Tom will be contacting the different military groups with the goal being that at least one veteran from each group will volunteer to hike. To hike you do not have to be a veteran. So…get on your hiking boots and hike the trail to honor those who were forced to do it…many of them paying the ultimate sacrifice. All donations will help support Patriots Hall…the museum that honors all veterans.

Vet Fest Event #2: Ride of Honor, the annual Vet Fest charity ride, open to bikes, cars, jeeps or ? will be held on March 19. It is scheduled to start at the museum and end at the VFW in Walhalla.

Registration opens at 11:00 and the first bike out will be at noon. All should be in by 3:30 and awards will be at 4:00. The first 50 to register get a free t-shirt. There will be a 50/50 and many door prizes. There are 10 designated stops…some "adult oriented" and some "family oriented" but it will be driver's choice to stop at any 4 of them. Entry fee is $20.00, second entry is $10.00. Visit "Vet Fest" on Face Book or call Smitty at 864-280-0107 for additional information. Families or groups are encouraged to participate. The 10 locations offer fun for everyone.

Tours: Groups or individuals can tour the museum on Saturdays or by special arrangement by calling Jon at 864-638-8558. There is also a power point presentation for groups unable to tour.
