Museum News: The new display on the second floor is about to be completed. On one wall there will be the documented history of two related families, all originally from Oconee County. The two families, Smith and Alexander, have 19 members who "answered the call". Six of those members served during WWII and included one KIA. Gene Smith, family member, Joyce Brickett, member of the PHA board, and three Clemson University intern students have worked together over the past 6 months to assemble the components of the display. These components include notebooks, scrapbooks, framed photos, shadow boxes and other documentation pertaining to the family members who served. Mike Wallace, owner of Print It in Seneca, is assisting by providing the display board. Related artifacts will be displayed in a small cabinet purchased with funds from a grant provided to PHA by the Schneider-Electric Foundation. The other displays in this room will be military artifacts requiring special security. Please come by and view the new displays.
Board of Directors: Additional board members are still needed. There is much to do as we move forward into a new year. Jon Busch, president of the board, has been working closely with the various veteran organizations to schedule volunteer docents for Saturdays when the museum is open from 10 to 3 and eventually open the museum on Fridays also.
Veteran Interviews: There are still WWII Veterans in Oconee County who have not been interviewed. Please help us schedule them so they can "tell their stories". There is a sign-up sheet in the museum and arrangements can made to schedule interviews at their convenience.
Vet-Fest: This seventh annual fund raising event for Patriots' Hall will take place to honor all veterans. It will be held on Saturday, March 21st (rain date March 28th). This year the event is to be family friendly so everyone, especially children, can participate and learn. It will include historical and military trivia questions that can be answered by following the map provided at registration. All vehicles-cars, jeeps, motorcycles, etc. are encouraged to participate. The driver entry fee is $15 and will include a sheet of questions. Additional sheets may be purchased for $10 per adult or $5 per child under age 10. Families can work together for one entry or each person may have their own entry. The map provided will show the locations where the answers to the questions will be found. Registration will begin at Patriots' Hall at 12 noon on the day of the event. All vehicles must return to the VFW by 5:00 where a meal will be provided and awards will be presented at 6:30. Also included will be a silent auction of unique items donated by local merchants.
Membership: If you think your membership in PHA is due for renewal, or if you wish to make a donation, please fill out the form below. PHA is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible.
Walk of Honor: The next order for bricks is about complete. The bricks are purchased in memory of or in honor of a family member, friend or group. They do not have to be a veteran or an Oconee County resident. The cost per brick is $60 and forms are located at the museum or on the web site at oconeeveteransmuseum.org
Tours: Don't forget that groups and families can schedule a tour of the museum any time by calling Jon at 864-638-8558. A power point program is available to share with groups who wish to learn more about PHA and the museum.
